Parent FAQs:

Do you offer an advanced group for highly able students? Yes, anyone can request assessment for our advanced groups, which are available for all age groups. This assessment is a 15-minute timed iq test taken at any point from a student’s second lesson onwards and is completed during session time. We assess ability based on an iq test, which is included in the lesson cost. The reason for using an iq test is that it’s a more effective gauge of intelligence than most of the national curriculum exam papers, which assess experience in the subject to a large extent and thus are a less effective gauge of pure ability. Furthermore, it means that those with less subject experience are not at a disadvantage and will have access to the pace of teaching right for them. This group operates at an accelerated rate, and therefore it is necessary to test students to see if they will cope with learning at this pace. In this way, the tutor can deliver optimal lessons.

What are class sizes? We have 3-5 students per tutor, and the number is often capped at 3 due to tutors otherwise being unable to assist with all student needs.

Pricing-  Our rate is £15/hour for all students. Before the first session, we will take payment by bank transfer, which can be taken in the centre. For this reason, on your first visit, please turn up 20 minutes before the session begins.

How do we make sure students get all the support they need? We don’t tolerate any disruptions with students being asked to leave the centre after the second instance of misbehaviour which disrupts lessons. We ensure every student is sufficiently challenged by having groups dedicated to specific ability levels ((generally we have sets 1-4 (there may be more groups operating than this, however, as far as ability levels go, there will be 4 categories), with set 1 being for the most able students and there can be movement between sets based on student performance)).

What ages do we cater to? All ages are welcome from key stage 1 upwards.

Missed/rearranging lessons - If students are expecting to miss a lesson, please talk to a tutor before a session, and they will give extra homework to further reinforce the topic being covered. If you want to rearrange lessons, please talk to a tutor in the venue at the end of a session.

Do you hold mock exams? We offer mock exams to everyone. In addition, parents can request exams at any time or can request that all lesson time is dedicated to active learning instead.

Do I need to purchase additional course materials? You will be notified in time of which books we work from. It’s primarily 11+ students that books are essential for. For now, all resources will be provided by us.

Are your tutors qualified? Our tutors are recruited through 2 avenues. They are degree holders or are ability-assessed at very high standards, and many people do not make the grade. Irrespective of their route to entry, tutors are then assessed on their ability to teach the particular topic they’re being tasked with. Again, if the desired standard is not met, they will not teach the course.

How much homework is given every week? On average, 11+ students get 5 hours, GCSE students get 6 hours, and A-Level students get 8 hours. The reason for this is so as not to exhaust students while ensuring progress is being made at a substantial rate. If the workload were reduced, then students wouldn’t be able to progress as quickly as their homework is what reinforces class learning, and until this is reinforced, students should not move on to a new topic. Parents should feel free to discuss homework volume with tutors if desired.

What is the deadline for completing homework? Homework will only be set for completion before a student’s next session

How to sign up? Before the first session, we will take payment by bank transfer, which can be taken in the centre. For this reason, on your first visit, please turn up 20 minutes before the session begins.

What educational tech do we recommend? If students have spare time, it’s worth trying quizlet. This app has activities which make progression in topics easy and gradual. One example is that a student would put in a word and its definition in for the site to then create tasks with. The student would start by matching terms and their definitions, then the tasks would get gradually more testing up to the point where they require the student to type out the definitions in full word for word.

What fun techniques are available to improve subject performance? For all essay subjects, an external component to learning that will improve performance is reading; this is not essential, but it’s rare that there isn’t a genre that’s genuinely enjoyed. If you can work with your child to find what they’ll most enjoy, it’s the only true leisure activity guaranteed to aid performance. In time, then work to make a tiny increment in reading level with every book, including students who start out reading at a very high level, all while sticking to the favoured genre. Also, please note that having high endorphin levels contribute to a desire to learn and students’ pace of progression. To stimulate these, in doing so categorically improving quality of life, promote either physical activity, reading, or ideally both. Again, it is worth working to find a form of physical activity that they enjoy, or the whole process will equate to progress only for a short time. Like reading genres, it’s rare that there isn’t something that appeals.

Any other questions? Please read the information provided on this site in full. It’s very valuable and includes ideas that parents/students should put in place before a student’s first session.
